On Thursday night, the 2020 NBA lottery took place, and may have changed the landscape of the league as we know it. The Minnesota Timberwolves landed the #1 overall pick, and are now poised to add a young talented player into the mix with D'Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns. However they aren't the only ones who this lottery went well for.
The Golden State Warriors, who prior to this season went to 5 straight finals and won 3 of them, landed the #2 overall pick, and have a multitude of different options now. The Warriors can now either leverage the pick as a trade asset to get additional help for Steph, Klay and Draymond, or if Minnesota takes wither Edwards or Ball, they could wind up with talented Center James Wiseman from Memphis. Who would seemingly be a great fit for the Warriors current lineup, offering rim protection and an inside scoring prescence.
Although an argument can be made that the Charlotte Hornets or Chicago Bulls may be the luckiest of the teams in the lottery last night. They jumped from the eight and seventh spots to round out the top 4 picks. Charlotte could end up with either Edwards or Ball to pair with Devonte' Graham in what could form another exciting young backcourt in the NBA.
The Bulls already have a young core featuring Coby White, Zach Lavine, Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr, and they'll certianly be happy to either add more young talent with the #4 pick, or trade it for someone who will excelerate this teams winning timeline.
While things went great for the fans of these 4 teams, the New York Knicks fan base was once again disappointed. Coming into the night, they were seeded with the 6th best odds to land the #1 overall pick, yet saw their pick fall to the #8 pick. While the Knicks are seemingly on pace for another losing season, they could still end up landing a quality player at this spot. Players such as Tyrese Haliburton, Killian Hayes, Cole Anthony, and more could still be available at the #8 pick. All would be good young point guards with potential to pair with RJ Barrett.
The Grizzlies were also pretty unfortunate last night, they needed their pick to move up into the top 4 from #14 in order to keep it, after blowing their 3.5 game lead for the 8th seed, and losing the play-in game for the playoffs. Since it stayed, the Celtics will now take the pick, leaving Memphis without a first round pick. The Celtics now hold the 14th, 26th, and 30th pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, giving them some options on building their young core, or trading for some assets that can help them win now.
Now that the 2020 NBA Draft lottery is complete, it will be very interesting to see what teams trade back or out of their picks, and who will be the #1 pick out of Anthony Edwards, Lamelo Ball, and James Wiseman.
